Fix 1: Right-click twice, not once
This is the cause most of the time. The first right-click on a YouTube video opens YouTube’s own menu (Loop, Copy video URL, Stats for nerds). Keep the mouse still and right-click again. Chrome’s menu replaces it, and “Picture in picture” is in that list.
Fix 2: Start the video first
Chrome only pops out a video that has loaded and started. If the player is still on the thumbnail, paused at zero, or showing a “Video unavailable” message, there is nothing to float. Press play, wait for the picture, then try again.
Fix 3: Wait for the ad to finish
During an ad, YouTube swaps the player’s source. A window opened during the ad often closes when the real video begins. Let the ad end or skip it, then pop the video out.
Fix 4: Check Chrome’s permission
Open chrome://settings/content/pictureInPicture. The setting should allow sites to enter picture-in-picture, and youtube.com should not be in the “Not allowed” list. Remove it if it is, then reload the YouTube tab.
Fix 5: Rule out other extensions
Ad blockers, “enhancer” extensions, theatre-mode tools and custom YouTube skins often wrap or replace the player. Open the video in an Incognito window, where extensions are off by default. If picture-in-picture works there, re-enable your extensions one at a time to find the one responsible.
Fix 6: Update and restart Chrome
Go to chrome://settings/help, let Chrome update, and relaunch. A pending update is a common reason for a feature that worked yesterday and not today.
The shortcut: one click instead of the menu
Picture in Picture for Videos adds a toolbar button that pops the playing YouTube video out in one click, with no menu at all. It also lets you set your own keyboard shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. See the full YouTube picture-in-picture guide for every method.
On a phone: different rules
This site covers desktop Chrome, but many people who search for this are on a phone, so briefly: in the YouTube mobile app, picture-in-picture depends on your country and subscription, and it has to be switched on in two places.
- In the YouTube app: Settings, then Playback (or General), then Picture-in-picture.
- On iPhone: Settings, General, Picture in Picture, “Start PiP Automatically”.
- On Android: Settings, Apps, YouTube, Picture-in-picture, Allowed.
- Music content usually needs Premium to keep playing outside the app.
If none of that applies and it still fails, update the app and restart the phone. A browser extension cannot change how the mobile app behaves.
