Disclosure: we make Picture in Picture for Videos, the first entry. Everything else here is listed so you can make your own choice. We copied the figures from each Chrome Web Store listing on November 1, 2026. We have not hands-on tested the other extensions, so the “best for” notes come from their listings, not our testing.

Rating shows the average with the number of ratings in brackets. A high average from a few dozen ratings tells you less than a similar average from thousands.

1. Picture in Picture for Videos

Ours. One click on the toolbar icon pops the current tab’s video into Chrome’s floating window, and you can set your own keyboard shortcut. It works on YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, Hotstar, Twitch and most sites with a standard video player, and it is available in 55 languages. It was last updated in October 2026. The weak spot is the small number of ratings, 23, for its user base. Add it to Chrome.

2. Picture-in-Picture Extension (by Google)

The official option, and the most installed by a wide margin. It is tiny and open source. Its listing shows the lowest rating here and no update since February 2025, and its fixed shortcut is Alt+P. We have a full side-by-side comparison.

3. Picture in Picture | PiP | Floating Player for Youtube

The strongest rating among the extensions here with more than a thousand ratings: 4.6 from 1.3K. Its listing says it works on YouTube, Netflix and other sites.

4. Picture in Picture - floating video player

A popular alternative with 400,000 users. Its listing was last updated in February 2025, so check that it still suits you before relying on it.

5. Force Picture-in-Picture Extension

A fork of Google’s extension. Its listing says it forces picture-in-picture by removing the attribute sites use to switch it off, and that it has no analytics. Consider this one if a site refuses the normal route.

6. PiP - Picture in Picture Plus

The largest extension here at 3.5 MB. Its listing advertises subtitles and floating any part of a page, which goes further than Chrome’s standard window. It has fewer users and ratings than the others.

7. Picture-in-Picture any site

A different approach: its listing says it opens a whole site in picture-in-picture, not only video. It has a high rating, but it was last updated in July 2024.

How to choose

  • You only use it occasionally: try Chrome’s built-in option first. Our how-to guide covers every method.
  • You want one click on most sites: pick an actively updated extension.
  • You want an official, open-source tool: Google’s extension.
  • A specific site will not pop out: check our supported sites list and the troubleshooting guide first.
  • You need subtitles in the window: look at an extension that lists subtitles as a feature.

What to check before installing any of them

  • Permissions. Chrome shows what the extension can access when you install it.
  • Privacy. Read the listing’s privacy section and the developer’s policy.
  • Last updated. A long gap can mean less support as Chrome changes.
  • Recent reviews. Sort by newest and look for your main video site.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best picture-in-picture extension for Chrome?

It depends on what you need. For one click on most video sites, any actively updated extension works, including ours. For an official option, Google’s extension is open source. For sites that switch picture-in-picture off, Force Picture-in-Picture is built for that job. The comparison table shows the numbers.

Do I need an extension for picture-in-picture in Chrome?

Not always. Chrome has picture-in-picture built in through the right-click menu and the media controls button. An extension adds a one-click toolbar button and a keyboard shortcut, and can reach videos that the built-in menu does not offer.

Are picture-in-picture extensions safe?

Check each listing before you install. Look at the permissions it asks for, the privacy section, the privacy policy, the last update date and recent reviews. An extension that has not been updated for a long time, or asks for more access than it needs, deserves a closer look.

Why do so many of these extensions look the same?

Most of them ask Chrome to open its own picture-in-picture window, so the floating window, video quality and controls are similar. The differences are in how you trigger it, which sites it handles, how often it is updated and what data it handles.

Is this comparison biased?

We make Picture in Picture for Videos, so read it with that in mind. The numbers are copied from the Chrome Web Store, rival extensions are linked so you can check them, and we have not hands-on tested them. The “best for” notes come from each listing’s own description.
